NUMA Oxygen is a company based in London, which specialises in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, a rather specific form of medical treatment usually adopted by athletes. Whilst they had a website already, it had been made some years ago and was in need of an overhaul, both visually and functionally. With a template and established brand identity at my disposal, my task was to adapt and expand their current website whilst maintaining the style, themes and feel of their old one.
This project had a small team, including myself and two other colleagues, of which I was the only UX Designer. There was some iteration throughout the project for both desktop screens and an app for regular clients, as they did not have a clear image of what they wanted.
Problem
The client considered their website to be outdated and lacking in functionality. Often times their client base would ignore, or be unaware of extra requirements during the booking process, which also hindered the efficiency with which the business could be run. The initial ask was to provide a solution for this, including several booking and payment journeys, as well as a redesign of the old site that maintained the brand identity while breathing new life into the website.
Methodology
After an initial call with the client to understand the scope of the project, I conducted research into the websites of other competitors. A key request was that we maintained a degree of elegance, while also trimming a lot of the visual elements and layouts. This was arguably the most difficult part of the task, as making a minimalist design even more so detracted from the overall presentation.
As the client had no clear vision, I set about creating multiple screens for each journey, playing back my work so they could pick and choose elements they liked for me to focus on including in the final version. The booking and management journeys were simplified further, though they ultimately decided to focus on the redesign of the current site.
Once we had a design settled, I conducted a few rounds of user testing, which went well. The feedback was positive overall, with a number of small details brought to light which required further fine-tuning.
Results
For reasons beyond my position, there were some difficulties progressing with the launch of the new site. However, the designs were ultimately well-received, despite frequent iterations due to the shifting scope of the project.
The strict and paradoxical requirements of staying faithful to the original, while also completely redesigning the website was challenging, and my design decisions would have been different should I have had more creative freedom. However, it was a good learning experience, not just for my design skills, but also for my management of stakeholders and planning of projects.
"Overall, Jamie was fantastic. Utilizing his skills in Figma and UI design, he was instrumental in creating an impressive prototype of what the NUMA system would look and feel like. This prototype played a crucial role in winning the business and enabling the project to take off."
